Aunt Stella is the aunt of the brand's founder Joseph Dunkle, born in Germany in 1908, who later emigrated to the United States. As a kindergarten teacher, she is most known for her love of sharing her homemade baked cookies with family and friends. In 1983, her nephew Joseph opened the first handmade cookie shop in Tokyo, Japan, using the brand name Aunt Stella, upholding the traditional spirit and developing the recipes and techniques passed down from Aunt Stella, which have been well-loved by Japanese consumers. In early 1989, it ventured into Taiwan and maintained its unique crispy texture and flavor, accompanying many Taiwanese consumers as they grew up and participated in many important moments in life together. When asked why Shiteri cookies have remained strong for nearly 30 years, founder Joseph Dunkle stated, 'There is no secret. We carefully select every ingredient. In addition to using imported Australian butter, we also use high-priced, healthy, and rare Arabic sugar or Japanese san-on sugar, so every handmade cookie conveys our dedication.' A gift expresses the taste and intention of the giver. Aunt Stella once said, 'The most important process in making handmade cookies is not controlling the oven temperature, but the warm intention made for someone; that is the most precious aspect of handmade cookies.'
